Today you can broadcast something happening right in front of you to hundreds of people using only your phone.
Social media services like Facebook Live and Periscope make it possible for everyday people to livestream what’s happening around them, whether they’re witnessing something unusual in public, part of a public demonstration, or simply speaking their mind into the camera.
Periscope zoomed into popularity during the 2015 protests at the University of Missouri. Today the most popular streamers include Buzzfeed, GoPro, and comedian Joey Diaz, who delivers a explicive-laden motivational speech every Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday.
Facebook Live is social media monster Facebook’s answer to livestreaming apps like Pericscope and Meerkat. Several Facebook Live streams went viral last year, including Youtuber SuperDeluxe’s live 2016 election map, Soundscapes by Ted Yoder, and of course, Chewbacca Mom.
Comedian Tim Heidecker also hosts a live call-in talk show on Facebook Live. On Friday mornings, fans and listeners can call in to talk to Heidecker via Skype. Topics can cover just about anything.
What's next for these livestreaming apps? Regular shows a la YouTube. Personally, I think it seems likely.
